I’m always on the lookout for good value food, and Stockton definitely isn’t short of cheap cafés if you know where to look. One place I didn’t know about until recently is Retro No.9. I wasn’t even looking for food at the time. I was exploring the back streets, having a wander through Green Dragon Yard and the Flea Market, when I spotted a small café tucked right at the entrance. Cobbled street, old barn-style door, no big signs shouting for attention, its easy to miss if you’re not paying attention.
But stepping inside, it’s a completely different story.

A café with real character
Inside Retro No.9 you’re greeted by friendly staff and one of the most genuinely retro café spaces I’ve come across. It’s not themed or forced — it feels natural, like the place has grown into what it is over time.
You can sit down for a proper old-fashioned English breakfast while surrounded by vintage items, records, band T-shirts, and all sorts of quirky bits from the past. The café and the retro shop are completely mixed together, which somehow just works — especially considering it’s right next to the flea market.
The food (and the prices)
I’ve eaten here twice now, both times early, so I went for breakfast — and honestly, for the price, it’s hard to fault.
Small breakfast: £3.50
Large breakfast: £5.00
Tea or coffee: £1
It might actually be some of the cheapest food in Stockton. It’s simple, filling, and exactly what you want from a café like this.
Later in the day they also serve hearty home-cooked meals like mince and dumplings, chicken curry, and Sunday roast dinners. From what I saw coming out of the kitchen, everything looked spot on — and still very affordable.

More than just food
One thing that really stood out was the atmosphere. Sitting in, you hear locals chatting, sharing stories, and clearly knowing the place well. There’s a real sense that people come back here regularly, and it gives the café a proper community feel that you don’t always get elsewhere.
While you’re waiting for food, you can browse the retro shop — records, lamps, instruments, old tech, and even things like Spice Girls bobbleheads. It’s the kind of place where you go in for breakfast and come out with something you didn’t plan on buying.
Final thoughts
Retro No.9 is simple, cheap, and full of character. Good food, friendly people, and a retro shop built right into the café and its all sitting quietly at the edge of Stockton’s flea market.
If you’re in Stockton and fancy something affordable with a bit of personality, Retro No.9 is well worth a visit.
