Seaton Carew Teesside’s Underrated Seaside Town

Nobody talks about this small seaside town that puts the big ones to shame, and I don’t know why. Seaton Carew in Hartlepool is right up there with the best of them.

You’ve got long sandy beaches with views of some of the UK’s largest ships, modern kids’ arcades with hundreds of machines from penny slots to driving simulators, a bowling alley and sports bar with pool tables, darts and more – real fun for all ages.

Food and drink-wise, there’s plenty: fish & chip shops (I usually hit Fish Face, but Almighty Cod’s solid too), Indian restaurants, cafés, pubs, and ice cream parlours doing posh scoops for just a few quid (Seaton Gift & Rock Shop is great value for ours).

We ended up with a pizza in the car boot one time, but it’s all easy and proper classic seaside vibes. If you’re in Teesside and fancy a classic day out – beach walks, games, food, Seaton Carew is definitely worth the trip.

Everything’s along one strip, loads of parking, and it just feels right.

Seaton Carew FAQ

I’ll let you make your own mind up because they’re all decent! We usually go to Fish Face or Almighty Cod. Youngs does a solid kids meal too.
If you twist my arm, I’d say Fish Face edges it for Seaton’s best fish and chips.

Tides change a lot year-round. Sometimes the sea’s miles out, sometimes it’s right up to the prom. Always check up-to-date times here:

Quick tips:

  • Low tide = massive sandy beach for walking / sandcastles
  • High tide = sea hits the wall, good for photos but less space
Yes, Seaton Carew has its own railway station on the Durham Coast Line (Northern Trains). Key details:

Seaton Carew is best known for its long sandy beach, its Victorian-era seaside resort history, and (unfortunately) the infamous “Canoe Man” fraud case from 2002. The beach still draws crowds for walks, sea views, and the arcades. It’s a proper old-school coastal spot.

Yes, they’re great! Millions have been invested in recent years. Proper classic seaside arcade fun with all the 2p machines, claw grabbers, and lights. Kids (and adults) love them.
