Roseberry Topping The Classic Teesside Climb

If you ask anyone what the best hike in Teesside is, the first answer is usually Roseberry Topping. It is not hard to see why, while there are hundreds of great walks and trails across the region, this one stands out as a proper bucket list climb.

Rising to 1,049 feet, Roseberry Topping has that distinctive shape you can spot from miles away. Stand almost anywhere in Teesside and you will see it poking up on the horizon, quietly daring you to get up there.

The Walk Up

From the main car park, there are two main routes to the summit. The shorter, steeper one gets your heart pumping quick – direct, popular, feels like a real climb and gives that fast sense of achievement.

It takes about 25 minutes to get to the top. The other winds longer through woodland with a steadier pace, flatter bits to catch breath & better if with kids or wanting a gentler go. Either way, it is short enough to feel doable but steep/uneven in places, so sturdy shoes and watch footing if wet/windy.

At the Summit

Reaching the top never gets old. People sit with flasks of tea or snacks, just soaking in the views. On a clear day, you see right across Teesside, North Yorkshire countryside, way further than you expect from such a quick hike. One of those spots where you naturally slow down and take it all in.

The Way Back Down

Plenty of paths down to vary it up – I often wander towards the old shooting box. No need to retrace steps exactly. Keep an eye on livestock (dogs on short lead), steep drops, and weather.

Main pay-and-display car park on Roseberry Lane, Newton-under-Roseberry (TS9 6QR or TS9 6QS). Costs £3.80 up to 2 hours, £6 over 2 hours/long stay (card only, no cash often). Gets packed weekends, so arrive early. Toilets in the car park (seasonal).
About 25-40 minutes up from the main car park, depending on your route and fitness. The short steep path hits you quick and feels like a proper climb; the longer woodland one is steadier with flatter bits to catch your breath.
Yes, dogs are welcome, but keep them on a short lead around livestock and watch the steep drops/edges at the top. Plenty of folk bring theirs – just be mindful of other walkers and sheep in the fields.
Clear days are unbeatable – you get magic panoramas from Teesside coast right across to the North York Moors. Early morning or late afternoon dodges the biggest crowds and gives cracking light. On a clear night the Teesside lights below look brilliant, but mind your step in the dark!
Wear sturdy shoes (paths get uneven and muddy after rain), bring water and a snack for the summit, and check the weather – it can be proper windy up there. Take your time on the steep bits, and enjoy the flask of tea at the top – that’s the best bit.
